Why is my air con not cold?
Usually gradual refrigerant loss rather than a fault. Air conditioning systems typically lose a small percentage of gas every year through normal wear on seals and hoses, so most non-cold systems need a re-gas rather than a repair.
Other causes include a blocked condenser, a failed compressor, a blocked pollen filter, or a leak. A leak is usually the reason a system that's just been re-gassed goes warm again within a few months, so it's worth mentioning if this has happened before. How often should air con be serviced?
Roughly every couple of years is a reasonable guide, though it depends on how much the car's driven and how well the system's holding its gas. Air conditioning isn't part of the MOT, so it's easy for it to go unchecked for years without anyone flagging it.
Should I run my air con in winter?
Yes, it's worth running for a few minutes even in winter. It keeps the seals lubricated so they're less likely to fail, and it helps demist the windscreen faster since air con dries the air as it cools it.
What refrigerant gas do you use?
Most cars from around 2017 onwards use a different refrigerant, R1234yf, to older R134a systems, and the two need different equipment. Tell RH Automotive your make, model and year and we'll confirm what your car takes before booking you in.
Can I re-gas my own air con with a canister from a shop?
You can, but it doesn't tell you why the gas ran low in the first place. A DIY canister just tops up the system, so if there's a leak, it'll likely run low again. Overfilling, underfilling or using the wrong gas can also damage the compressor, which is a far bigger repair than the re-gas would have been.

Does air con affect fuel economy?
Yes, running the compressor uses a bit of engine power, so you'll use slightly more fuel with it on. It's a small difference on most journeys, and not a reason to avoid using it when the car's genuinely too hot to drive comfortably.
