Getting your car ready for a track day or race weekend

For drivers who already know their car and just need it prepped properly, RH Automotive covers the checks that matter before you're on track.

Pre-event inspection

A full check before you head to the track, so problems are caught in the workshop, not on the circuit.

Brakes for track use

Brake fluid change and uprated pads where needed, since standard road pads and fluid can fade under repeated hard braking.

Fluids & cooling

Oil, coolant and other fluids checked, since track use works an engine much harder than road driving.

Geometry & alignment

Full 4 wheel laser alignment set up for track use, not just road settings.

Tyres & pressures

Tyres fitted and pressures set for the conditions on the day.

Fasteners & wheel torque

Wheel torque, fasteners and safety checks confirmed before you go out.

Most track cars are worth a once-over after the event too, not just before it, so anything the day found gets caught early rather than at the next service.

First-timer?

First track day? Here's what your car actually needs

Most track day organisers run a noise test and a basic visual check before you're allowed out, and that's really what your car needs to pass, not a full race build. Here's what's actually worth checking before your first session.

Tyre tread and pressure

Check tread depth is well above the legal minimum and that pressures are right for track use, which is often higher than road pressures. Worn or under-inflated tyres are one of the most common reasons cars get turned away at scrutineering.

Brake fluid

Track driving heats brakes far more than road driving, and old brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. If your brake fluid hasn't been changed in the last couple of years, get it done before your first track day, not after.

Oil and coolant levels

Sustained high revs and hard cornering work the engine harder than any road drive. Check oil and coolant are at the right level, and get it checked if you're not sure.

Loose items

Empty the boot and glovebox of anything that could become a projectile under hard braking or cornering. Satnavs, parcel shelves, loose tools and anything else not bolted down should come out.

Wheel nuts

Have your wheel nuts checked and torqued to the right setting, especially if the wheels have been off recently for any reason.

Fuel

Track driving uses more fuel than road driving. Start the day with more than you think you'll need.

None of this needs a full race build. A well-maintained road car in good mechanical condition, with fresh brake fluid and the right tyre pressures, is enough for most first track days. RH Automotive can check all of the above before you go, and tell you honestly what does and doesn't need doing.

Straight answers

Track day questions we get asked

Do I need a roll cage or uprated brakes for my first track day?

Almost never for a first session. Most circuits and track day organisers are happy with a standard, well-maintained road car that passes a basic noise and safety check. Roll cages, uprated brakes and other serious upgrades tend to come later, once you know you're going to keep doing it.

What's the difference between a track day and a race?

A track day is open-pit-lane, non-competitive driving at your own pace, usually with a noise limit and a basic safety check. Racing is wheel-to-wheel competition, needs a race licence, and comes with stricter technical and safety requirements. Most people start with track days.

How long before a track day should I get my car checked?

A week or two beforehand gives enough time to source parts if anything needs replacing, rather than finding out the day before. RH Automotive can check brakes, fluids, tyres and alignment in one visit.
