Your tyre size is printed on the sidewall as a sequence of numbers and letters, for example 205/55 R16 91V. In that example, 205 is the width in millimetres, 55 is the sidewall height as a percentage of the width, R16 means a radial tyre for a 16-inch wheel, 91 is the load index and V is the speed rating. RH Automotive needs all of it to quote correctly.
| In "205/55 R16 91V" | Means | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 205 | Width | The tyre's width in millimetres, measured sidewall to sidewall |
| 55 | Aspect ratio | The sidewall height as a percentage of the width (here, 55% of 205mm) |
| R16 | Rim diameter | Radial construction (R), fitting a 16-inch wheel rim |
| 91 | Load index | A code for the maximum weight the tyre can carry when correctly inflated |
| V | Speed rating | A letter code for the tyre's maximum rated speed |

Fitting the wrong size affects more than how the car looks. It can throw off your speedometer reading, change how the anti-lock brakes and stability control behave, and in some cases invalidate your insurance if the size doesn't match what's specified for the vehicle. RH Automotive always fits to the size specified for your car, or an approved alternative, and explains why if we ever recommend something different.
The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round. A 20p coin pushed into the tread gives a rough check: if the outer rim of the coin is visible, the tyre may be close to or below the limit and needs a proper check.
Tread depth isn't the only thing that matters. Cracking in the sidewall, a tyre's age, and uneven wear across the tread can all mean a tyre needs replacing well before it reaches the legal minimum.
Wear across just the inner or outer edge of a tyre usually points to incorrect wheel alignment rather than the tyre itself. RH Automotive checks alignment as part of any tyre fitting where wear looks uneven, and offers full 4 wheel laser alignment.
See wheel alignment for what that involves and the symptoms to look out for.
We stock a range of tyre brands to suit different budgets and vehicles, from premium to budget. Tell us your budget and how you actually use the car, and we'll recommend the right tyre rather than just the first one in stock.
Uneven tyre wear often points to a steering or suspension fault. See all the car repairs RH Automotive carries out, each one quoted before any work starts.
